Open all year round this venue dedicated to all things falconry is in Marshwood, on the lovely West Dorset coastline, so whether you fancy making a weekend of it, or you are within easy driving distance, these experiences make a superb day out for all the family. You will be met for these birds of prey in Dorset experiences by owner, Martin Ballam, who is hugely experienced when it comes to raptors and other birds, from hand rearing and incubation to veterinary and rescue work, with many years of professional work all over the country. Now settled on the south coast, Martin is a passionate falconer who has a way with words that'll keep you completely enthralled as you meet the likes of Jade the Red Tailed Hawk, Ginny the Northern Goshawk and Fudge the Ferruginous Hawk, as well as the Harris Hawks Jazz and Mabel. Here in Dorset you can choose between a half- or full-day falconry experience.
The half-day starts with introductions followed by an informative explanation on how to handle these magnificent birds. Once everyone is at ease, you'll head out into the open countryside of Dorset to fly the birds of prey in their natural habitat.
You’ll be shown how to get a hawk to swoop in and land on your gloved hand - a truly stunning experience you'll never forget.
Choosing the full-day Dorset falconry activity means you get a more in-depth insight into the life and work of a falconer. The morning session includes meeting the raptors, a demonstration as to how to handle the birds and an explanation of what training a bird of prey involves, all presented in a way that's fun, engaging and interesting for all ages.
After a complimentary lunch, you’ll spend the whole afternoon flying the hawks and this is when you’ll see the true grace and power of these birds in flight. The Ultimate Birds of Prey Day on the Dorset site includes all that the full-day falconry course offers, with the added thrill of meeting and working with the centre’s eagles. Kojak is a Bald Eagle - so called because they are piebald, ie. black and white in colour - and Konnie is an agile and buoyant Tawny Eagle who’ll win you over instantly. These bird of prey and falconry days in Dorset are a wonderful way to make some feathered friends and whether you’re an avid bird lover or new to this feathered world, you’ll love this fun hands-on day out on the coast.
